This superb White Burgundy has a lovely perfume, and very Puligny-Montrachet in style. The really heightened fruit and exciting aromatics dance across the palate. This is a marvellous wine from a master winemaker and will be excellent to drink now after a short time in bottle.
Alix always presents a Bourgogne Blanc on her list. It comes from vines planted in the Côtes de Nuits, in the Côte de Beaune or in the Mâconnais, depending on the year. Chardonnay is the source of all great white wines in Burgundy. This "generic" Burgundy is from vines planted in parcels in Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, at the edges of the village appellations. This cuvée, the only blend from different villages in the line-up of the Maison, is a lovely surprise. It's major selling point? It's freshness.
The 15 barrels of Bourgogne from Alix spend less time in barrel (11 to 12 months) than her other wines. Two thirds are aged in barrel, none of which are new, and the other third is aged in stainless steel. The objective is to preserve the maximum freshness and focus on the fruit without trying to exaggerate any complexity. Other than this, the Bourgogne is made like all other whites from Maison; no favoritism is exercised!
Alix de Montille only selects parcels that align with her demands: controlled yields from carefully pruned and plowed vines. Nothing is purchased unless the parcel is sustainably farmed. Some vineyards are even in the process of being converted to organic viticulture. Alix works with fruit from approximately five hectares spread between the Côte de Beaune, the Côte Chalonnaise, the Mâconnais and Chablis. Almost 35,000 bottles are tagged "Deux Montille Soeur-Frères" every vintage.
