Imposing single-site Barolo. On the nose, an intense perfume of plum and ripe cherry with hints of flowers and spicy aromas. On the palate, concentrated and profound, with soft texture and a long finish.
Barolo Bussia is an intense ruby red colour, lively and bright. Complex on the nose with rich notes of red fruit and floral aromas, accentuated by notes of roses, wildflowers, spices, and forest floor. The palate is intense with supple, silky tannins. The finish is long and harmonious.
Barolo Bussia DOCG comes from the splendid amphitheater-shaped vineyard in the Bussia Monforte d’Alba area. This historic wine was produced for the first time at Prunotto as a single vineyard wine in 1961. The balance and complexity of the Nebbiolo grapes are enhanced by the vineyard’s varied south to southwest exposure and the traditional aging in large barrels.
Selected grapes were destemmed and crushed, then wine fermented at 30ºC with twelve days’ maceration. The wine was aged for twelve months, mostly in 50hl oak barrels, with a small quantity in second-fill barriques. This was followed by twelve months’ bottle-ageing before release.
Suitable for Vegans
Alfredo Prunotto founded his business in 1922, and was one of Piemonte’s most dynamic exporters until his retirement in 1956. The company passed then to Prunotto’s friend Beppe Colla, now a revered winemaker and one of the founding fathers of modern Piemonte. The quality of the top wines goes without saying, but the rest of the range is made with equal aplomb. The style is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability of structure are viewed as positives, but copious new oak is not.
The south-facing Bussia vineyard in Monforte d’Alba is at a height of 350 metres above sea level. The soil is a combination of calcareous compact clay and sandy layers. Known for its powerful, meaty style of Barolo, Bussia is one of the highest-regarded sites in the DOCG.
