Caizergues – ‘Les Traucat’ 14% ABV AOP Terrasses du Larzac 75cl

Ruby red, with a complex and elegant nose and hints of blackberry, blueberry and black pepper. Boasting soft tannins this full-bodied red has excellent length. Perfect with all red meats, particularly roast rib of beef or shoulder of lamb.

Only produced in excellent years from carefully selected grapes grown on our best parcels, Le Traucat, is named in memory of M François Traucat. François Traucat was the celebrated 16th century Nîmes gardener who - along with Olivier Serres – was responsible for the extensive cultivation of the mulberry tree and thus for the expansion of sericulture across the Languedoc. 

• Caizergues is an old Languedoc name (Occitan) pronounced kai-zairg

• The domaine was once a silk farm

• The silk trade in France began in 1540, with Lyon its epicentre

• Francois Traucat, who we've named our top cuvee (Le Traucat) after, was a 16th century Nimes gardener and is credited for the intense cultivation of the mulberry tree (l'amorier) across Languedoc

• Our wines reference this heritage in the silk weave on the labels and the names of our references e.g., Le Papillon de Soie = the silk butterfly; Les Tisserands = the silk weavers; Les Magnarelles = the women who looked after the silk worms

• Outlier: Les Voisins = the neighbours - since we used their Vermentino and Viognier! However, the wine has been made to our specifications and by our winemaker and theirs.
