Oremus Aszú 3 Puttonyos is crafted using centuries-old traditions unique to the Tokaj region. The production of this wine depends on the development of Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot, which transforms grapes into aszú berries. During the

autumn, the vineyards are enveloped in fog and dew, fostering botrytisation. The botrytised berries are meticulously handpicked in several waves, as they do not ripen simultaneously. For the 3 Puttonyos classification, three 25kg baskets of Aszú berries are added to each 136-litre (gönci) barrel of must. The macerated berries undergo light pressing, followed by a slow fermentation in new

Hungarian oak barrels over several weeks. The wine is aged for two years in 220 and 350-litre barrels and further refined in bottle for at least one year. This painstaking process results in a vibrant, fresh, succulent wine with floral aromas and citrus-driven palate notes.

The Vintage

The 2019 growing season began with a mild, dry winter, progressing into a cold and relatively dry spring. Budbreak occurred at the usual time, but growth was sluggish due to the cool weather. Summer started wet and cool, delaying veraison, but from mid-August, conditions turned dry and sunny, supporting excellent ripening. The autumn brought cool nights and sunny, windy days, creating ideal conditions for botrytis. Grapes were hand-harvested in two to three waves between late September and early November, ensuring only the best botrytised berries were selected. This vintage highlights the singular terroir of Tokaj, with grapes sourced from 60 hectares within the 100-hectare Oremus estate.

In 1993, the Álvarez family, of Vega-Sicilia fame, established Bodegas Tokaj Oremus. The vineyards are spread over more than a dozen different hillside sites, of which ten were classified ‘primæ classis’ in 1803. Here the group is able to produce exceptional white wines, both dry Furmints and sweet Aszú styles, from 3 puttonyos up to the mythical Eszencia. All present the region’s unique combination of succulence and tang, and together showcase the amazing versatility of Furmint grown in this historic location.
