Crafted in the tradition of Tokaj’s legendaryAszú wines, Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2018 is the pinnacle of meticulous winemaking. Noble rot transforms the grapes into Aszú berries, hand-picked through several vineyard passes during
the autumn harvest. For the 5 Puttonyos classification, five 25kg baskets of these botrytised berries are added to each 136-litre gönci barrel of must, followed by a light pressing and slow fermentation in oak barrels. The wine is then aged for over
two years in Hungarian oak and further refined in bottle for a year, achieving
extraordinary depth and balance. Aszú 5 Puttonyos is designed to represent the ultimate balance of sweetness and acidity that a vintage can offer, making it an
ideal choice for vertical tastings to compare vintages. The 2018 vintage is defined by the phenomenon of overripening, resulting in heightened floral and fruity aromas, with a reduced influence of botrytis.
The Vintage
The 2018 growing season began with a mild winter and abundant rainfall, creating healthy water reserves. A warm spring supported vigorous vine growth and optimal flowering, while the summer’s consistent heat ensured steady ripening. Overripening, rather than Botrytis cinerea, played a defining role in shaping this vintage, yielding a wine with exceptional floral and fruity characteristics. Grapes were meticulously hand-picked between September and November in multiple waves to ensure only the finest berries were selected. Sourced from the 100-hectare Oremus estate, with 60 hectares dedicated to sweet wine production, this vintage showcases the precision and care of the estate.
In 1993, the Álvarez family, of Vega-Sicilia fame, established Bodegas Tokaj Oremus. The vineyards are spread over more than a dozen different hillside sites, of which ten were classified ‘primæ classis’ in 1803. Here the group is able to produce exceptional white wines, both dry Furmints and sweet Aszú styles, from 3 puttonyos up to the mythical Eszencia. All present the region’s unique combination of succulence and tang, and together showcase the amazing versatility of Furmint grown in this historic location.
